Gas Alarm Rattle
Gas Warfare was just one of many horrors soldiers of all nations endured. This gas rattle is a typical device used to warn soldiers of a gas attack. Soldiers who heeded the warning then donned their gas masks. Carl Panak Collection
Trench Periscope
One of the hazards of trench warfare was the constant threat of snipers. Thus peering over a parapet was a dangerous task. Small compact periscopes were used to peer out into no mans' land such as this one. This boxy, wood periscope is a common type used. The periscope had a folding wood handle and the hook was used to attach to equipment, or simply hang in a dug out when not in use. Carl Panak Collection
